A Day in the Digital life of Nick Reardon

Digital media plays an integral part in my life. Every day I rely on several digital media sites to stay current with my favorite sports teams, family, and friends. I also use digital media to market myself and my work. My favorite digital media sites to utilize are the "big three" social media platforms; Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Twitter is my favorite digital media site to use overall. Twitter is the best media platform for reaching the largest audience because I can categorize my tweets by using a hash tag to reach my target audience. When I include a hash tag in my posts, I instantly reach out to my target audience. For example, when I write an article about the Oklahoma City Thunder or St. Louis Cardinals, I include the hash tag #ThunderUp or #STLCards respectively at the end of my tweet, so my article automatically reaches my intended target audience. Twitter conveniently organizes all tweets from the accounts in chronological order on a "timeline". As an amateur sports journalist, I mainly utilize Twitter to gain publicly for all my articles. Twitter's "retweet" function allows others and myself to quickly share my articles and other information that I am interested in. I mainly use Twitter to market my articles and stay up-to-date with the latest news about my favorite teams. The negative aspect of Twitter is that the application is not the best for sharing moments and events that you have done, because each tweet is limited to a hundred and forty characters. Overall, I have had a positive experience using Twitter because I am aware of what the site is meant to be used for.

Facebook is the most personal digital media site for its users. Facebook users compile a "friends" list, who of which can see the user's posts. Users also have the ability to follow pages from their favorite interests including sports teams, athletes, celebrities, companies, etc. Facebook has the broadest age range of users, so it is the best site for me to share moments and stay up to date with my family and friends. Unlike Twitter, Facebook does not implement any character restrictions on posts, allowing users to post more detailed and informative posts with their Facebook "friends". Facebook is not the best place for me to market myself and my articles, because I can only reach an audience that is limited to only my Facebook "friends", unlike Twitter where I can reach out to an unlimited audience. Overall, I have had a positive experience with using Facebook, because it allows me to keep up with the latest happenings of my friends and family, and allows me to share detailed posts about exciting events and activities I have recently attended. While Facebook is not the greatest digital media site for me to market myself and my articles, it allows me to easily share my latest articles with my family and friends.

Instagram is a digital media site designed for users to share photos with their "followers". I usually utilize Instagram the least, out of the three major sites that I use. Instagram the most one dimensional digital media site I utilize, since it is only used for sharing photos. I feel that Instagram is somewhat repetitive and unnecessary since I can already share my photos on Twitter and Facebook. Another frustrating aspect of Instagram is that I cannot utilize it at all to market my articles, since every post must be an image. In addition, I feel that Instagram does the worst job out of the major digital media sites in managing spam accounts, which is extremely frustrating.

I do receive some marketing emails from companies, but most of them are sent directly to my spam folder. Most of marketing emails I receive in my inbox are from my favorite sports teams, the St. Louis Cardinals and Oklahoma City Thunder. The common theme that I have noticed from these marketing emails is that they are primarily focused on marketing the latest ticket packages and giveaways. For example, around the holiday season, I always receive an email from the St. Louis Cardinals, advertising and marketing ticket packages for the upcoming season. This is a shrewd marketing strategy implemented by the Cardinals because many people who receive these emails will consider purchasing ticket packages as a holiday gift. The marketing emails that usually catch my attention are the ones from the Oklahoma City Thunder and St Louis Cardinals, advertising special offers in the online team stores. These emails usually prompt me to at least take the time to visit the team's store website to view the latest offers.

The major quality of the use of digital media marketing that I have noticed is the personalization of the marketing messages I receive on these sites. Companies utilize data mining to advertise their products to consumers who are interested in them. For example, I follow numerous pages about the St. Louis Cardinals on the social media platforms I use, so I daily see advertisements from companies marketing memorabilia and products related to the St Louis Cardinals. Data mining has transformed the way companies reach their target market, because it instantly allows a company to advertise to consumers who are more than likely interested in their products based on their social media profiles. In lieu of companies wasting resources and time to market their products to consumers who will never be interested in their products, they are able to directly market to their ideal target market.
